Apple patents
Don’t rub your hands just yet. As much as I want it to be true, more often than not Apple’s Patents are just that: patents. They usually never see the light of the day on a product. Anyhow, that’s interesting.
Ballmer (and Microsoft) still doesn't get the iPad
The message was clear: Microsoft still doesn’t understand why its Tablet PC concept has repeatedly bombed over the best part of a decade. Apple sold more iPads in its first three months of availability than PC vendors sold Tablet PCs in the whole of last year; in fact, the number of iPads sold in that period is likely to eclipse the number of Tablet PCs sold both last year and this. But still the company is persevering: stick a regular PC operating system on a laptop, give it a touchscreen, and then take away the keyboard and pixel-perfect pointing device. Ballmer even reiterated the company’s position: slates are just another PC form factor.
The iPad is a neat package. It’s not a device for everyone. There are lots of things the iPad doesn’t do well; there are many things the iPad doesn’t do at all. But it’s not trying to be these things; it’s a conveniently sized, highly portable, long-lasting media-consumption device. It’s ideal for browsing the Internet, reading e-mail (with the occasional short reply), looking at photos, playing music and videos, and casual gaming. It doesn’t need much in the way of configuration. It doesn’t run Mac software. Every single piece of software on it is designed to be used with fingers. In no way is the iPad striving to be a PC, but it isbecause of this—because it’s not running software designed for keyboards and pixel-perfect pointers, because it’s running software that’s simple and restricted, because it uses a slow, but low-power, ARM processor—because of these things that it is so good at the things it does do.
Tablet PCs, on the other hand, have had all the size and weight of conventional laptops, with all the software of regular laptops, but without the human interface devices to make them useful. They contained the compromises of the iPad—touchscreens are never going to be as good for text entry as physical keyboards, touchscreens, even with styluses, are never going to be as precise as mice—but without any of its benefits, including the light weight, impressive battery life, and purpose-built software. They made sense in some vertical markets, but as mass-market devices, they’ve consistently failed.
And so it is set to continue because, as Ballmer said, the operating system is called Windows.

I really don’t know if this solution will succeed, problably it won’t. Even though, it points to the end of the “Desktop Metaphor” and the way we will, in the future, interact with our environment, i.e, with the digital world that no longer will be called computer world.

Ao que tudo indica, faltou a HP neste gráfico. Se ela vai ser bem sucedida em ganhar espaço agora que tem o melhor sistema operacional móvel, o WebOS, não faço a mínima idéia. Mas a Hewlett Packard é uma das poucas empresas de tecnologia que tem receita, capacidade e agora sistema para traçar uma estratégia vitoriosa no mundo pós-PC, como bem mostra a Techcrunch. Seria interessante ver isso, quanto mais competidores neste mercado melhor.

Recentemente circulou pela internet um quadro da Wired descrevendo o que seria a guerra pelo mobile space. O quadro apresentava três contededores: Apple, Google e Microsoft. A julgar por este artigo do link, há mais um nesta arena, a velha e, ainda, muito boa HP, que aparentemente decidiu ser a nova Apple.
Voltando para o iOS 3.1.3. E concluíndo que raramente vale o sacrifício mudar o sistema operacional de meus gadgets.

Eu havia indicado um artigo do NYT sobre dois diplomatas americanos que, sob as bênçãos do Departamento de Estado, usam o twitter para fazer diplomacia.
O título deste post é um exemplo claro do que eles estão fazendo. Começo a considerar que eles são a vanguarda de mudanças que serão ubíquas em alguns anos nas chancelarias do planeta.

Deve ter ficado muito mais fácil criar aplicações para o Mac depois do lançamento do Snow Leopard. A cada dia, encontro mais e mais aplicativos que rodam apenas nesta versão do sistema. Isso ocorria, é claro, mas em escala bem menor, com o antecessor, o Leopard, e, ainda assim, era comum encontrar aplicações que, embora funcionassem melhor no 10.5, podiam ser usadas também na última versão do 10.4 Tiger.
Isto dito, reforço o que escrevo acima também por outro motivo: deve ter ficado muito mais fácil criar programas para o Snow Leopard, pois a qualidade das aplicações também caiu. Antes um software para Mac tinha toda uma idéia claramente associada a marca, não importava o fabricante. Essa “idéia” era algo que primava pela simplicidade na aparência, facilidade no uso e cuidado nos detalhes. Nesta nova leva de programas “Snow Leopard Only” isto parece ter desaparecido.
Google estuda redes sociais
Em 2003 o Google lançou o Orkut, a minha conta lá é desta época. Em 2008, anunciou o GoogleWave. Em 2010, lança o Buzz. Embora criados por outros, a empresa tem ainda, e há muito tempo, em seu portfólio Youtube e Blogger.com.
Se até agora não aprendeu o que é e como funciona uma rede social, melhor partir pra outra, pois já perdeu o timing para o Facebook e o Twitter.
