In 2004 Merlin Mann at 43folders noticed NV gave me the idea to have it synchronize its notes with a folder of text files, but I didn’t end up releasing that next update to the program until late 2009 after I became inundated with complaints about NV requiring the Rosetta component in Snow Leopard (it was that old). Within that span of time Simplenote appeared, created (initially) as an homage to the app, and following the renewed interest in NV, Mike Johnston (co-creator of Simplenote) proposed that NV adopt Simplenote’s synchronization API.
